L'image d'Epinal du couple anglais prenant le thé, ou d'une pause générale à 17 heures pour le thé, est répendue mais pas très réaliste. Par contre les anglais ont une vrai tradition du thé et si vous visitez le Royaume Uni vous vous devez de tester les "afternoon tea".

Mercedes Benz World

Is-it a rainy day? Looking for a place where the kids can run and the adults can have relax time? Or you would like driving racing cars and have a very bad CO2 footprint 5I have to stay in the current trend)? Or even better you do not know if you would like a Smart or a SLK cabrio? Mercedes Benz World is for you.

We were in the first category (!), and indeed children were able to run and go in many cars (not all obviously) and pretend driving. Meanwhile we had coffe break, looked at some cars (museum part mainly) without any stress.

For the other categories, there is a big track to have driving practice in racing cars or 4x4 and Mercedes presents its whole range of cars from Smart (around 8000£) to AMG (up to 200 000£) and even more expensive ones.
This huge car centre is in Brookland (KT13 0SL), close to the M25 junction 10.

Que faire par temps de pluie dans le Surrey? A la recherche d'un endroit où les enfants peuvent se défouler pendant que les parents papottent? Ou alors vous voulez conduire des voitures de course? Enfin, vous hésitez à acheter une Smart ou un cabriolet SLK? Mercedes Benz World est pour vous.

Nous appartenons à la première catégorie (!), et en effet les enfants ont pu courir, monter dans les voitures (pas toutes évidement) et faire semblant de conduire. Alors que nous avions un café ou nous regardions quelques voitures (le musée principalement).

Pour les autres catégories, il y a un circuit pour prendre des leçon de conduite (4x4, sur route glissante, ou vitesse), et toute la Gamme Mercedes est présentée: depuis la Smart (8000£) jusqu'aux AMG (200 000£), voire même encore plus pour certaines.

Ce grand garage Mercedes est à Brookland (KT13 0SL), proche de la M25 (sortie 10).

Hampton Court Palace

Hampton Court Palace is just at the edge of the City of London so it is easy to access from London (tube or even boat as the castle has been built close to the Thames) as well as from the country side. Just a problem, the car park is very small.

In the early 1500, Henry VIII decided that Hampton Court will be his main residence. William III expended it a lot and tried to make the palace as an English Versailles. Today, the palace is open to the public, and is a major tourist attraction. It has not been lived in by the British royal family since the 18th century.

The main events are the The Hampton Court Palace Festival (an annual musical event) and the The Hampton Court Palace Flower Show (an annual event in early July, run by the Royal Horticultural Society).

The Palace is huge, the main highlights are the Henri VII's kitchens, the Chapel royal, the Great Hall, culture and painting exhibitions and the gardens: the Privy Garden (newly restored King private garden), the Ponds Gardens, the Great Fountain Garden (with nice yew trees planted byQueen Anne (1702-14)) and the some many others, even a maze and a tennis court!

Walking in these gardens is very nice, then followed by a walk along the Thames and as usual here, the walk finishes in a pub.

Le Palais d'Hampton Court est juste à la bordure du Grand Londres, donc il est facile d'accès depuis Londres (même en bateau car il est au bord de la Tamise) mais également des environs. Seul bémol, le parking est assez petit.

Au début du seizième siècle, Henri VIII adopta Hampton Court comme résidence principale. Puis, pour rivaliser avec Versailles, William III décida d'entreprendre de grand travaux. Aujourd'hui le Palais, ouvert au public, est une des attractions majeures de Londres. Il n'a pas été habité par la famille royale depuis le XVIIIème siècle.

Deux évènements principaux se déroule à Hampton Court: un concert de musique (The Hampton Court Palace Festival ) et une exhibition de fleurs en Juillet (The Hampton Court Palace Flower Show).

Le palais est immense. Les principales attractions sont les cuisines d'Henri VIII, la Chapelle Royale, le Grand Hall, les nombreuses peintures et scultures, et les jardins: le Jardin Privé (Privy Garden) nouvellement restauré qui était le jardin du roi, de nombreux petits jardins dont les Ponds Gardens, et le Jardin de la Grande Fontaine (the Great Fountain Garden) avec ses beaux bois d'If, et pleins d'autres encore dont un labyrinthe et un court de tennis.

Marcher dans ces jardins est très agréable, puis continuer la promenade le long de la Tamise et enfin, comme toujours en Angleterre, se reposer au Pub.

Rye (Sussex)

Another very nice little tidy town: Rye in the Sussex. One of the 5 cities built to protect England from any French invasion. On the top of a hill, Rye kept its medieval look and is now a famous place for secondhand shops. Rye deserves a stop despite the number of tourists, and nothing is better than having a drink on a terrasse with a nice view on the coast.

St Mary's church and the Castle are the two most famous monuments to see, but walking in the streets and visiting the shops are the main goal. A bit further (1 mile), the Chamber Castle can be a goal for a small walk.

In May, Rye Mayor Making Ceremony and Throwing Hot Pennies is the main event of the city, followed by the Arts and Litterature Festival in September.

Un autre beau petit village: Rye dans le Sussex. Une des 5 villes construites pour protéger l'Angleterre de toute invasion française. Bati sur une colline, Rye a gardé son aspect médiéval et est devenu un lieu reconnu de la brocante. Rye mérite que l'on s'y arrête (malgré le grand nombre de touristes), et rien de plus reposant que de boire un verre sur une terrasse avec vue sur la côte.
L'église St Marie et le château sont les deux principaux monuments, mais il est surtout agréable de se promener dans les rues et profiter des petits magasins. Un peu plus loin, le château de Chamber (env 2km) peut être l'objectif pour une petite marche.
En mai, le maire du village jette des pièces (pennies) sur la foule pour commémorer l'age d'or de la ville. En septembre il y a le festival des Arts et de la littérature.

Godstone Farm

By the time it took me to write something about Godstone farm, it has been closed! Because of the e-coli outbreak, you can not enjoy anymore this farm. Indeed in Godstone farm children could touch most of the animals. Of course, washbasins were available everywhere but knowing children, the hands would go in the mouth before being washed!! Anyway, Godstone will re-open, just let the children look at the animals, not touch them. A tractor ride is also available, and another very nice part is the huge playground (indoor and outdoor) where children can spend hours while you are enjoying the sun. The bad part of it is the food as the quality and the choice are quite poor.
Godstone farm

Vu le temps qu'il m'a fallu pour écrire ce message sur Godstone Farm, la ferme est fermée pour des cas de "e-coli". En effet, sur place les enfants pouvaient toucher tous les animaux. Bien sûr des lavabos étaient répandus mais connaissant les enfants les mains allaient dans la bouche avant d'être lavées. Mais Godstone Farm va ré-ouvrir et les enfants pourront de nouveaux profiter des animaux, du tour en tracteur et du très grand parc de jeux (intérieur et extérieur). Le mauvais point est pour la nourriture qui, tant pour le choix que pour la qualité, n'était pas à la hauteur.

Priory Farm

One of the current practice here is what I call the "Farm tourism". Lots of farms in the South UK add some activities to the normal ones, and they do not forget to create a little shop with the farm products. Priory Farm is one of them. Located in South Nutfield (RH1 4EJ), not far from Redhill, Priory Farm is big (as you can see if you look at their web site: priory farm). On top of the farm shop, there is a Plant Centre and a gift shop. One nice feature is the "Pick your own", where you can pick the seasonal vegetables or fruits from the field (cheaper and fun for children). We did as well the discovery walk which is a small walk for children in the field and wood. If you want to do "Farm tourism", Priory Farm is nice. Moreover, the local product in the shop are good.

La diversification des fermes est ici une pratique courante. Attirer les touristes dans les fermes en créant des activités ludiques est source de revenu. Bien sûr, le passage par la boutique des produits de la ferme est obligatoire! Priory Farm est l'une d'entre elle. Située à Nutfield (code postal RH1 4EJ), à côté de Redhill, Priory Farm est très grande comme vous pouvez le voir sur le site web (Priory Farm). En plus de la fameuse boutique locale, il y a une jardinerie et une boutique de babioles (gift shop en anglais, difficile à traduire!). Une caractéristique intéressante est le "pick your own" où l'on peut cueillir les fruits ou légumes de saison (moins cher et amusant pour les enfants). Nous avons également fait la "marche de découverte" qui est en fait une petite marche pour les enfants dans les champs et forêts. Si vous voulez faire du tourime dans la ferme, Priory Farm est bien. De plus les produits de la boutique sont très bien.

Bowls

If you are tired, the weather is nice and you want a rest in a real British atmosphere, you can watch bowls (also named bowling). Playing is another story as the code is important (white clothes and surely some more), the rules reasonnabily easy but the access to the game may not. Bowls is a mix of French "petanque" or "boules" and curling (game played on ice). I donot imagine that you are tired after playing bowls, but you may have spent a good day with friends,and as a spectator just grab a pint or a cup of tea, watch them playing an go to your next location.

Si vous désirz un petit moment de calme dans une vraie ambiance anglaise, et si le temps est propice, vous pouvez regarder le jeu de "bowls" ou "bowling". Jouer sera plus compliqué car le code est important (habits blancs est un minimum), les règles assez simples mais l'accès est plus difficile. Les "bowls" sont un mélange de pétanque et de curling (jeux que l'on joue sur la glace). Sûrement pas fatigant à pratiquer, le but principal doit être de passer du bon temps avec des amis. En tant que spectateur, prenez une pinte ou une tasse de thé, regardez un peu le jeu puis continuez votre route!

Canterbury

If you are in South UK, you have to spend one day in Canterbury, Kent. No excuse, it worths travelling. The cathedral of course, but the city centre is nice too and you have many other things to see (St Augustine's Abbey, Canterbury Norman Castle, ...) and you can walk along the Great Stour river. Canterbury Cathedral is one of the oldest and most famous Christian structures in England and forms part of a World Heritage Site. It is the cathedral of the Archbishop of Canterbury, leader of the Church of England and who shares the power with the Queen. The cathedral has been first built around the 7th century, but the construction you can currently see started in 1066 (after the Norman conquest in 1066, Lanfranc became the first Norman archbishop. He thoroughly rebuilt the ruined Saxon cathedral in a Norman design cathedral based on the Abbey of St. Etienne in Caen, of which he had previously been abbot). Canterbury is full of tourists but it is a very nice place to visit.

Si vous passez par le sud de l'Angleterre, Canterbury, dans le Kent, est une étape obligatoire. Aucune excuse n'est permise, la cathédrale et le centre ville méritent que l'on y passe une journée. Il y a d'autres choses à voir (l'abbaye St Augustine, le château romain, les remparts, ...) et à faire (dont la marche le long de la rivière Stour). La cathédrale de Canterbury est l'un des plus vieux et plus célèbres bâtiments chrétiens d'Angleterre et fait parti du patrimoine mondial de l' UNESCO. C'est l'archevêque de Canterbury qui la dirige (il partage officiellement le pouvoir avec la reine). Si le premier édifice construit à cet emplacement date du 7ème siècle, le bâtiment que l'on visite ajourd'hui date de 1066. Il a été construit, suite à l'invasion normande, par Lanfranc qui s'est grandement inspiré de la cathédrale St Etienne de Caen dont il a été évèque. Canterbury est une très jolie ville malgré le nombre important de touristes.

Reigate Heath

Do you fancy another walk around Reigate? Still easy and smooth, a walk in the wood, then follow a golf court. Take care of the little white balls and if someone shout "fore" (meaning 'Watch out afore' or ahead), it means you need to move away from the court, they are ready to play. You can make this walk as long as you want, the wood is big and is as well nice for mountain biking, and you can have a goal: the wind mill. Yes, close to the golf clubhouse, there is a wind mill, nicely renovated, and you will never know what is inside now: Reigate Heath windmill.

Prêt pour une nouvelle promenade dans les environs de Reigate? Toujours facile et tranquille, cette promenade suit un parcours de golf, puis va dans la forêt (là vous la prolonger à votre guise). Cette belle forêt est également idéale pour faire du VTT. Proche du golf très fréquenté, il arrive aux joueurs de crier "Fore" qui signifie "poussez vous de là nous sommes prêt à jouer", il faut donc vous mettre à l'abri. La promenade peut avoir un objectif: le moulin de Reigate Heath. Et oui à côté du club house du golf, il y a un moulin bien rénové, et vous ne devi,errez pas ce qu'il y a dedans: Reigate Heath windmill.

Brighton

Brighton and Hove to be exact. Brighton was very famous in the 70's and you quickly understand that when you see the buildings in the seafront. It was the place to be, and many Londoners were spending their spare time in Brighton. Now they spend their week-ends there (London-Brighton takes less than 30 minutes by train) and Brighton is more than busy on a sunny Sunday (parking can be a nightmare these days). Swimming in the Channel for the courageous, laying on the rocky beaches for the lasy, I prefer walking in the historic town centre: very hilly and narrow streets, plenty of bars and restaurants (nice little restaurants not the chains we see in London), small little shops. Seagull, skateboards, artists' galery, fish and chips, trendy bars, ... you can find all the seafront clichés in Brighton. The tourist guides will tell you to visit the weird castle of Brighton (George IV's Royal Pavillon), English will recommend to enjoy the sun and the sea, I recommend the maze of the city centre. So in Brighton and Hove, you have the choice!

Night clubers recommend the Entourage (1 Middle Street) but I cannot confirm as it is out of my scop, the restaurant Due South (139 Kings Road) is known for its organic local produce, an English breakfast with sea view at the Meeting Place Café (Hove Sea Wall), or a pint in a pub: The Evening Star Pub (55-56 Surrey Street).

Brighton and Hove (nom officiel) était très recherché dans les années 70. Les londonniens y passaient beaucoup de temps, ce temps prestigieux est tout de suite identifiable par l'architecture des batiments de front de mer. Néanmoins, Brighton reste très populaire et les londonniens y viennent dès qu'il fait beau (Londres-Brighton prend environ 30 minutes en train) et se garer est difficile lors des beaux jours. Nager dans la Manche pour les courageux, se reposer sur la plage de galets pour les fainéants, je préfère gambader dans le centre ville: les rues étroites et pentues fourmillent de bars et restaurants (autres que les chaines que l'ontrouve à Londres) et de petits magasins originaux. Mouettes, skateboards, galleries d'artistes, fish and chips, bars tendances, ..., tous les clichés des villes de bord de mer sont à Brighton. Les guides touristiques vous diront de visiter le château excentrique de George IV, les anglais de profiter du bord de mer, moi du centre ville. Donc à Brighton and Hove, vous avez le choix!

Pour passer de longues nuits, les fêtards recommendent l'Entourage (1 Middle Street) mais je n'y ai jamais mis les pieds, plus dans mes cordes un bon restaurant bio avec des produits locaux Due South (139 Kings Road), ou prendre un petit déjeuner anglais au Meeting Place Café (Hove Sea Wall) et enfin une pint dans un vrai pub The Evening Star Pub (55-56 Surrey Street).

Tilgate Park Crawley

Let's move out of the Surrey, couple of miles away, and you arrive in Crawley. Forget the town and go straight to Tilgate Park (Tilgate Park Website). Nice big park with many activities (grass to relax and picnic, a lake to row, walking, ...) and a nature centre (with domestic a wild animals: nature centre website).

Sortons du Surrey, pas trop, et nous voilà à Crawley. Oubliez la ville et allez directement à Tilgate Park (Tilgate Park Website). Grand park, assez sympathique avec de nombreuses activités (beaucoup d'espace pour se relaxer, jouer au foot ou au cricket, picniquer, marcher, ...) et le Nature Centre pour y voir de nombreux animaux domestiques et sauvages (nature centre website).

Jolly Farmers

Nice family Pub close to Reigate! Good food, organic of course, nice terraces (one on the road side, one on the back side) and cosy inside. A "Deli-Pub and restaurant" to be exact. As I do not know what a "Deli-Pub" is, a delicious Pub? Are there no delicious pubs? I call it a family pub as we can go inside with youngers, and the waiters are very nice serving by walking around them. On top of it, there is a little shop, a delicatessen to be precise, and once a week, a local market. Strongly recommended to try it, The Jolly Farmers is located at Buckland, on the A25, 1km West of Reigate.

Jolly Farmers est un charmant Pub "familial" proche de Reigate. Nourriture correcte, bio bien sûr, deux belles terrasses (une côté rue et une à l'arrière) et un intérieur cosy. Un "deli-pub et restaurant" pour être exact, mais ne sachant pas ce qu'est un Deli-pub (pub délicieux? par opposition aux pubs non délicieux), je l'appelle pub familial car ils acceptent les petits et les serveurs travaillent dans le sourire en slalomant entre les enfants. De plus, il y a un petit magasin et une fois par semaine un marché de produits locaux. Essayez le et dites moi ce que vous en penser. Le Jolly Farmers est à Buckland, 1km à l'ouest de Reigate.

Walking in Chipstead

You may not know but this is the British food weeks (19 Sept-4 Oct), so we tried to find something related to that.
We'have found a walk around a farm done by Ranger Bob Crompton. He explained all about the area and how the farm is working in order to preserve the nature.
You do not need to wait for Bob to walk around, starting point is at Farmyard at Shabden Park Farm (CR5 3SF).

Et oui il y a une quinzaine de la nourriture britannique (Quinzaine de la nourriture britanique) du 19 Sept au 4 Oct! Nous avons cherché des choses à faire liées à cela, et nous voilà embarqués dans une promenade autour d'une ferme à Chipstead
Le Ranger Bob Crompton nous fait faire le tour de la ferme et nous explique la façon dont il élève les animaux de cette ferme. Sans attendre Bob, vous pouvez vous promener, le départ est un parking à côté de Shabden Park Fram (CR5 3SF).
